5 Things To Look For When Specifying Composite Metal Panel Systems

What you need to know NOW about Aluminum Composite Panel Systems.

Creating Cornices

Can anybody fabricate composite metals?

Yes and No. Anyone with a hand router can cut and rout composite panels like anyone with a ratchet set can repair your automobile. Certified dealer/fabricators provide fully engineered and tested systems guaranteed to meet project specifications and endurance requirements.

Is the panel system difficult to install?

In fact, BAMCO´s systems are designed specifically for ease of installation. Our shop drawings provide details and information second to none in guiding field erectors through the installation process. BAMCO can also provide field support, project management and installation training programs upon request.

Are composite panels directional?

Solid coil coated colors are non-directional and may be used in varying directions. Metallic finishes are susceptible to “shading” when changing directions. BAMCO shop drawings and panel release cards allow for and monitor directional requirements to assure proper directional layout.

Is there a recommended back up construction for composite systems?

Aluminum composite panels can be attached directly to almost any substrate, though many require sub girts (i.e., masonry walls). However, BAMCO recommends Tyvek over all sheathed surfaces as a prudent secondary moisture deterrent.

What are the available finishes?

BAMCO can provide over 40 standard, 2 and 3 coat Kynar colors as well as Zinc, Copper, Brushed Aluminum, and Stainless Steel finishes, all standard*. Custom colors are available at a premium cost upon request. *(Some finish availability is based on quantity).

What is the difference between coil coated and post finished metal panels?

Post finished products are fabricated and then individually spray finished with either air or heat cured paints. Finish warranties are generally 5 to 10 years. Coil coating is a process where metal coils are run through a continuous application process called “reverse rolling”. Once coated, these coils provide the highest level of color consistency, even coil to coil, with standard 20 year finish warranties.

What is “Oil Canning” and does it affect composite systems?

Oil canning is the deformation of panel surfaces due to temperature variances and subsequent expansion/contraction. Oil canned surfaces appear dimpled or pillowy. When properly engineered and fabricated with a tested extrusion system, aluminum composite panels will remain flat with no visible Oil Canning.

What are BAMCO’s standard lead times?

Lead times vary based on project size and complexity. On smaller projects, shop drawings run approximately 6-8 weeks. Upon approved drawings, fabrication times run approximately 2-4 weeks. Quick ship programs are available on certain projects and can be requested by contacting

How much does the aluminum panel system weigh?

Approximately 2.5 lbs. per square foot, fully fabricated.

What are the maximum sizes available in composite panels?

  • 60″ x 192″ for Composite Aluminum Panel
  • 39″ x 192″ for Zinc
  • 48″ x 192″ for Stainless Steel
  • 36″ x 192″ for Copper
  • 50″ x 192″ for Brushed Aluminum

How do composite panels compare to .125 plate or foam panels?

There are several ways to achieve flatness with aluminum wall panels. Foam panels offer insulative value and span capabilities but have significant sizing limitations as well as small quantity set up and production costs. Aluminum plate systems offer similar advantages to composite panels but do not offer standard 20 year finish warranties (see above for post finish vs. coil coating); provide less flexibility when field issues arise, and cost more than composite systems.

Who manufactures the composite sheets that BAMCO uses in its wall systems?

Alcoa Architectural Products – Reynobond aluminum composite material. Alcan Composites USA Inc – Alucobond aluminum composite. Mitsubushi Chemical – Alpolic Composite Aluminum Material Almaxco – Almaxco aluminum composite material.

Are composite panels fire resistant?

Composite panels are available with fire resistant cores to address current building code requirements for high rise and other noncombustible required applications. Fire Rated cores meet North American building code acceptance including MEA in New York City, IBC IC30, BOCA and JBCC I.

Are composite panels LEED certified? (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design)

Composite aluminum panels are made from average yearly recycled aluminum content of approximately 85%. Material usage is one of the important areas of LEED consideration in evaluating “sustainable” buildings based on “voluntary” consensus-based national standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Additional LEED credits may be obtained for projects built within a 450 mile radius of our New Jersey facility. For more information contact the U.S. Green Building Council at

Can BAMCO provide drawings signed and sealed by a professional engineer?

Yes. In fact, we can provide calculations and a local PE Stamp for virtually every state in the country.

What type of warranties are available from BAMCO?

Along with standard 20 year finish warranties, BAMCO provides warranties for fabricated panels against normal use failure for up to 10 years, based upon review of application and project requirements. Sample warranties are available for review.

What other architectural metal products can BAMCO provide?

BAMCO can furnish and install a variety of exterior wall products including foam panels, louvers, column covers, equipment screens, sunshades, perforated and sound attenuated panels.
